Building emacs from source

  • Remove all other emacs versions from the system.
    Otherwise, you may get confused later on, when the wrong emacs version accidentally starts when double-clicking on some file.
  • Download:
 wget http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/emacs-24.4.tar.gz
 tar -xzf emacs-24.4.tar.gz
 cd emacs-24.4
  • Install dependencies:
# Satisfy most dependencies automatically.
sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get build-dep emacs24

Apparently that does not satisfy the Xaw3d dependency:
